This Tabriz Rug is Hand-Knotted with Wool and elements of Silk . The Tabriz "Mahi" Design is a Persian nickname for an elegant motif known as "fish in the pond" . The Mahi design is made up of rosettes framed by vine scroll, that often resemble jumping fish with polychromatic stripes, eyes and life-like features.
Tabriz Persian rugs are woven in Tabriz, the 2nd largest city in Iran/Persia. It is the capital of the East Azerbaijan Province in NW Iran and is located close to the Turkish border. Rug weaving in Tabriz has a long history. It is actually one of the oldest weaving centers and has been a center of rug production longer than any other cities in Iran/Persia.
The peak of the Tabriz weaving production was in the 15th and 16th centuries and its weaving were highly sought after both in Europe and the West. The second half of the 19th century saw another surge in outstanding Tabriz rug production.
